It's time for the family vacation. What would the family road trip be without the furry member of the family? There is no reason you cannot take your pet on a trip with you, but there are some safety tips you need to keep in mind.
Be careful not to leave your pet in the car unattended. Temperatures in the car on a warm day can get up to and above 150 degrees very quickly. If you must leave the pet alone for a short period keep the windows down an inch or two on both sides for a cross breeze. Get a small thermometer so you can monitor the temperature, but, if you can, have someone walk the animal and get it some exercise instead.
Always make sure your pet has plenty of water available. It's a good idea to bring a few gallon jugs of water and a container of his normal food from home. Changes in food and water can cause an upset stomach in some pets.
Keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier at all times. Do not think that since your pet normally stays right with you, he will now. You are in a strange place, another pet could be off leash and a multitude of things could happen. If your pet gets away from you while traveling, they will be very lost and afraid. Call local shelters and animal control units and advise them where you will be for contact.
Another important thing to keep in mind is identification. When traveling with your pet make sure the pet has ID tags. You may need to get special ones for use when traveling. These contact numbers must be a cell phone you have with you or a friend who can relay information for you. The information needs to be accurate where ever you may be.
Keep in mind that if you are planning long days at theme parks or other places your pet cannot go, you need to make prior arrangements. Many motels and hotels will not allow you to leave your pet unattended in the room, so think ahead. Many theme parks are pet friendly and have kennels available for your pet to stay at while you play.
Prior planning can make for a happy vacation for the entire family, but always keep your pets safety foremost in your mind.
