Are you tired of the fat jokes and people poking fun of your "big-boned" or "fluffy" dog? Did your vet recommend that Fido lose a few pounds or those cute and pudgy rolls?
Finding the right diet for your overweight dog is an important aspect of his health. An effective plan to get your dog back in tip-top shape includes balancing a healthy diet and exercise. The pet food industry has provided a plethora of dog food for weight maintenance for a variety of dog types. Dogs at different stages in their lives will need different considerations. Puppies are best suited for puppy labeled formulas. If your dog is older and his metabolism has slowed down, one of the older and less active dog food brands may be your best option. They are specially formulated to provide the vitamins and nutrients your dog will require at this age in his life. Also, eliminating all people food, table scraps and unhealthy dog treats is paramount to his health. Today's dog food is all a dog needs for optimal growth and healthy maintenance.
Exercise for your pooch is just what the doctor ordered. Dogs are naturally created to work and be active. Sitting on the couch with their owners watching tv is not part of their design. Dogs are natural hunters and workers. They are happiest and most content when they are allowed to do what they were made for.
If you give a dog an open field and a stick he just might run all day and leave you in the dust wondering where he went. Even older dogs will salivate at the sight of a wild rabbit or bird and give chase.
One of the best, easiest and cheapest forms of exercise and entertainment for your pet is going for a walk. This can be done just about anywhere regardless of where you live. It has been scientifically proven that dogs are good for you, good for lowering high blood pressure and stress levels. Add to this, daily walks to get you both in shape and it is a win-win situation for you and your best canine friend.
Do what is best for your weight-challenged dog and find the right diet for him today. He needs you just as much you need him.
