Reflections: Great pranks to play on people

by Donna Mccay

Created on: November 01, 2008

My dad loved to play pranks on company especially at the dinner table. He was interested in their reactions. A great big grin appeared on his face as he delighted in their responses. He had other pranks up his sleeve too. Here are some of his favorites.

1. Mom always had a table cloth on our table. Dad placed under the table cloth a flat rubber circle attached to a long small tube that had a bubble on the end. He would make sure this flat circle was placed under a guests plate. Then during the meal at any given moment he would squeeze the bubble and air would flow through the small tube and inflate the circle. Their plate would move go up and down.

My dad wanted to see if they would laugh, ignore, jump or look around to see if anyone else's plate was moving. Most just laughed with dad and said that was certainly different. Sometimes their faces were very red and they were embarrassed.

2. Dad had a spoon with a metal fly attached to it. He would make a guest a great cup of coffee and serve it to them with the spoon in the cup. He always made sure that he put the cream and sugar in and asked them to stir it up.

Then dad watched their faces as he talked and tried to distract them. Some didn't want to drink their coffee afterwards as the thought remained and turned their stomachs. Dad's big grin would appear and he would change the topic of conversation.

3. Rattlesnake eggs was a real big surpise and shock to all who opened the envelope. It isn't a wonder that some didn't have a heart attack. Some really jumped and was scared when they heard the rattling noise.

Dad would take a bobby pin and open it up and place a rubber band on it. Then broke off a match stick and placed inbetween the rubber band. He would get a small envelope and write in big letters "RATTLESNAKE EGGS" on the outside. He wound the stick tight and held it as he handed the envelope to someone. They now could open and see for themselves the rattlesnake eggs.

Most would jump and scream after hearing the sound before they even saw what was inside the envelope. We tried this prank at school on a teacher that we knew could take a joke. We dared not try a lady teacher or probably be sent to the principal's office.

College and School pranks that our classmates did and sometimes we participated are:

1. Short sheeting the beds was common.

2. Putting cornflakes on top of fitted sheet at the bottom of their beds.

3. Shaving cream fights of friends.

4. Changing their dorm room around when they were not there. They come home from a date exhausted and have to get their room in order. Sometimes they even moved the furniture out into the hall way.

5. Throwing some one in the shower who wore wigs and stunk.

6. In our high school music class all the students hated copying history of music notes on the front and back black boards. So they decided to put a pile of books in the piano so when she played there would be no sound.

They also put a bucket of water on top of an partially openned door so when she came in she got drenched.

We always had to say yes or no whether we would participate in class or not. So three fourths of the class decided to say no and got sent to the principals office and had to write a essay of 500 words.

7. Our younger son had fun resetting the clocks when dad had already done it when the time changes happened each year.

8. Our younger son when he was 5 years old used to throw cold water over the shower curtain at dad and then run and laugh.

We had lots of fun at school, family and our growing up years. There is more but that is a taste of our pranks.
