It is possible to get pregnant with only one fallopian tube. In fact, the fallopian tube need not be whole to conceive.
An ovary produces an egg. The fallopian tube delivers the egg from the ovary to the uterus. Fertilization of the egg can occur at the mouth of the tube or in the uterus.
The human reproductive system is very tenacious. Historically, medicine documents many cases of pregnancy occurring in women with partial ovaries, some as little as one-quarter; damaged, partial and/or missing fallopian tubes; and incomplete or incompetent uteri.
Statistically, the odds of getting pregnant decline less than 10% with the loss of a fallopian tube. As long as the pituitary gland signals the ovary to develop and release an egg from one of its follicles, that egg will travel toward the uterus, even in the absence of a fallopian tube.
Only one ovary produces an egg at a time. Since each ovary has its own fallopian tube, it is possible to get pregnant with only one fallopian tube, provided that the ovary to which it belongs is viable.
In the event that a woman only has one ovary, many times her body will compensate for the loss of one ovary by producing eggs with the remaining ovary every month rather than every other month. The pituitary gland will send all of its signals to the remaining ovary.
The chance of ectopic pregnancy, a pregnancy outside the uterus, only increases if the fallopian tube is damaged and traps the egg before it reaches the uterus. This is why women should immediately seek the advice of an obstetrical physician at the first symptoms of pregnancy.
Very rare instances cause the loss of a fallopian tube. Certain cancers, ectopic pregnancies resulting in fallopian rupture and advanced, pervasive forms of cystitis are the main causes of the choice of surgical removal of the fallopian tubes. More rare is the congenital condition where a female child is born without one, or both, fallopian tube.
Many physicians are saving more fallopian tubes, under the theory that a partial, healthy tube is better for the woman than no tube at all. This decision is one which should be made under the advice of a physician and/or with a second opinion based on individual health conditions.
Always consult with a obstetrical doctor to ensure that the pregnancy is as healthy as possible. Do not be deterred by only one fallopian tube. Pregnancy is possible.
