For years you have loved your pets; they are a member of your family. But now you have an extra addition! Congratulations! But, jealousy does not just happen with older siblings; it can happen with your beloved pet too. So how do you avoid your pet hating your new baby?
The first thing to remember is not to push your pet away. If you are feeding, let your pet sit next to you calmly. Let them sniff the baby as long as you are there to stop any possible accidents. Putting your baby in a Moses basket on a stand in the front room will allow your baby to remain safe, but also allow their scent to become familiar to any residing animals.
Leaving a dirty baby-grow or sleep-suit lying around will also help the animals recognise the smell of baby, but at the same time, leave something they are familiar with such as one of your sweaters so that there is a comforting scent as well. If your pet is a dog, take the baby for regular walks with the dog. They will soon become accustomed to the sounds, sights and scent of baby.
When it comes to night time, make sure that no pets are allowed in the room with the baby to avoid any accidents. However, it is important that you do not chastise them for going into the room. Remain firm, and simply place them outside the door before shutting it and walking away with them. Make sure your pet knows they are still loved. Once the baby has gone down to sleep give them lots of cuddles.
As the child gets older they will begin making more noise, moving around and grabbing at the pets. This can be a stressful time; the pets can become frightened and lash out, scratching your baby. Never leave your baby alone with animals and always make sure that both the baby and animal are safe, unable to harm each other.
Hopefully by following these simple rules and ideas your pet and baby should grow up together and become the best of friends. Congratulations and good luck.
