Does the thought of leaving your beloved poochie pal behind when taking off for that great travel adventure leave you feeling guilty? Are those big, brown, fuzzy eyes glaring at you as if to say, "what about me?" If you are worried that your best friend's safety could be in jeopardy, consider a few good tips to put your mind at ease and make your trip an enjoyable one for all.

Planning ahead will get you started in the right direction, no pun intended! Whether you are traveling with a dog, cat or other miniature, beloved creature, finding a veterinarian in the area you will be staying could save you time in case of an emergency. Obtain a reference from your own vet before leaving town. Adding the number to your cell phone will make it easy to reference should you need it.

Printing up a vacation tag to add to your pet's collar or cage could help your pal find his way back home should he become misplaced. Include name, address and phone number of hotel or temporary residence where you will be staying. Be sure to add your personal name as well.

Be sure that all vaccinations are up to date and bring along validation of these along with rabies tags and any medications your pet may be taking.

Prepare a travel kit which would include all the comforts of home to make your little pampered one feel comfy and secure. This would include a blanket, favorite toys, container for fresh water, food, hairbrush and some treats. It's always a good idea to take a small towel for any unexpected messes and bags for easy clean-ups after a potty break. An extra collar and leash and any clothing articles will make your kit complete!

Whether you are traveling with a dog or cat, a crate will help keep your pet safe while driving, and particularly for cats, even safer when exiting the car. Always leash your pets when taking them to and from the car, to prevent a quick dash in a strange environment. Rest areas offer a safe place for your pet to be away from traffic when stopping for potty breaks. They offer safe areas for pets to exercise as well.

Other thought should be given if you are traveling by air. Check with the airlines on pet restrictions, costs and time constraints. Food should be withheld from the pet approximately five hours before flight time. Water should be given prior to the flight.

A final tip, find a pet-friendly hotel. It will make your stay much more enjoyable knowing that your little guy will be as welcomed as much as you! There is usually an additional charge per night for a hairy guest but when you all settle in, you'll sleep much better knowing your little furry pal is right beside you!
