Reflections: Christmas

of the season. Grief becomes a dark veil of loneliness at this time. There is one less hug for a lovely gift, one less smile on a face and an empty chair on the table. The emptiness can be overwhelming.

The season brings painful memories of a departed loved one. There are no presents to give, none to receive. No calls to send,
none to expect. No one is knocking at the door.

Some make an effort to relive the past cheers of the season. The reality is, there is no substitute for the warmth of laughter and cheers on Christmas day shared with loved ones.

We live in a caring and compassionate society. Christmas dinners are offered to the less fortunate. There are volunteers who take the time on Christmas Day for these events. They share the gift of time, one of the best gifts ever. These occasions are well attended, everyone gets a wrapped gift, the air is filled with laughter and cheers. It must be heartwarming to know that someone cares. The Christmas spirit is alive and the tradition lives on.

Christmas is a time to share what we can. It is a time to support fund-raising events to bring some cheer to those in need. Share the gift of time with someone who otherwise will be alone. With the advent of technology, we can all reach out to far- away family and friends, let them know we are thinking of them during the festive season. Open our hearts, our home to those we love and care for.

For those who are alone at Christmas, I send you light and love this Christmas Day.
