It is always helpful to have employees like you when you are functioning in a management role. Employees still need to have limits placed on them. They still need to follow the rules and policies of the organization. Employees should never be able to view their manager as a rug they can walk all over and manipulate or be allowed to take advantage of that manager- employee relationship. Employees liking their manager should represent respect and a willingness to work together. It is always more difficult to work with and be a team player with someone you do not like or respect.

I have very strong reasons for feeling that it is vital component of my job to have my employees like me. I oversee 84 diverse personalities that may not always agree with me, but show me respect. Respect is earned and without it would be impossible to function as their manager. I have learned so much from interacting with my employees, and it has made me a better manager. As their manager, I realize that there is a fine line that all managers cannot cross, these are my employees and not my best friends. That does not mean you do not care or have feelings for them, but you cannot become personal friends because you will lose your objectivity and ability to make fair decisions.

As a manager trying to build a effective and cohesive team, it is important for your employees to like you. The relationship that is built between the manager and the employees is a critical factor in the success of any organization. Many employees will leave organizations simply because of poor management. There is an equation that says it all, Happy energetic managers equal Happy energetic employees.

Employees are looking for a manager who shows that they care and have good interaction skills with their staff. They respect a manager who lets them know what is expected of them. A good manager will identify individual strengths and utilize them. All employees want positive feedback and have a manager who recognizes them for a job well done. If you have a good relationship with the employee they will overlook shortcomings and realize everyone can make mistakes. It is important to pick yourself back up after making a mistake, learn what you could have done better and keep on going.

Good management should never be a popularity contest. As long as you maintain clear expectations and have the staff working to their strengths you will maintain a good relationship. There is a fine line that needs to be drawn. It is a mistake
