The love of money

by Sally Thornton

Created on: October 31, 2008

Love is a strong and powerful word. It is intense and a person loving money has a deep devotion for it. So, how does this relate to money? As far back as the ages goes, money has been used as a medium of exchange for goods or services. Whether it was livestock or precious metals, it was the exchange of one item for another. In ancient times barter was the form of exchange, that too, was giving one thing for another. Livestock and food stuff was not always available, therefore, precious metals began to be used which consisted of gold, silver, and copper.

Then, the same as now, selfishness, and greed was in the mind of humankind, even the Apostle, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, which was the price of a slave. He had that deep wanting, deep desire for money at the expense of, eventually, taking his life because he had betrayed his friend and Savior. What a price to pay, his money did him no good and he lost his life, as well.

Money can be beneficial and harmful. Money provides a defense against poverty and its troubles, enabling persons to get both necessities and luxuries. For this reason the possibility exists of a person's beginning to trust in money as their security. The love of money, as taken from the Bible, (1Timothy 6:10) is a root of all sorts of injurious things and by reaching out for this love some have been led astray from the faith and have stabbed themselves all over with many pains. For money, persons have perverted justice, prostituted themselves, committed murder, betrayed others and falsified the truth. This encompasses the whole aspects of the love of money.

Now, as never before, in the history of manking, we see how we have money today and it is gone tomorrow. Look at the plung on Wall Street. Listen to the news. Many are commiting suicide, killing their families and then themselves because they do not know how to live without money, granted we need a certain amount of money to live, but we are talking about persons that had it all, a large bank account. huge house, a streamlined automobile, boats and the like. These persons feel they cannot live without these luxuries. They would rather be dead, and so they are.

We should be satisfied with sustenance and covering, if that is all we have. Anything more we should appreciate and value, to the extent we are willing to share with those that do not have. Money is of no use to you when you are old, tired and alone. Use it throughout your life to build up pleasurable memories. Those that you need when you are old will remember you as a generous, giving person. They will be there when you need them.

Money cannot give you life, it can be obtained without it. It is the way you live your life that brings life. However, money can do many valuable things to make your life more fulfilling. There is more joy in giving than receiving. The more you give, the more you get back. Do you want to be old, tired and lonely with stacks of dusty money or do you want to be old and generous and be remembered as the one that gave all he had to give.
