Here are some tips to save gas without buying a new vehicle and lessen your footprint at the same time.
Everyone is looking for ways to cut down on gas expense and be a bit greener in the process.
There are some very easy to implement tips for lowering your gas cost and leaving a smaller footprint on the planet.
Keeping your car tuned up improves fuel economy as well as helping your car perform better. Keep a check on spark plugs, air and fuel filters, this can increase your mileage by 10 %.
Use the correct octane gas for your vehicle as well as grade of motor oil. Your vehicle's manual explains what octane and weight of oil works best in your car/truck.
Keep those tires properly inflated for increased gas mileage and a better ride. According to the DOE you can save 3.3% by having just the right amount of air in your tires. The maximum pressure is noted on your tires. You can check this easily with a tire pressure gage. When you fill up with gas, check your oil and air pressure as well.
Clean out the back seat and the trunk. If you are using your car as an extra storage room unload it and save 1-2% on fuel cost. Just 100 extra pounds cost you more in fuel, so clean out the trunk and while you're at it take off the bike rack or carrier on top, it slows you down and cost more gas money to carry it around all the time.
Slow down, be easy and enjoy the ride, the DOE says that every 5 mph over 65 mph represents a 7-percent decrease in fuel economy. Avoid excessive starting and stopping too. Keep that foot off the brake and not only save gas, but save on your brakes as well.
Using cruise control is another way to cut back on slowing and speeding up, it saves gas and helps you to better enjoy the drive. Put on some relaxing music, especially when you are in a hurry to help you stay relaxed and avoid putting the pedal to the metal. This not only saves gas, but your nerves and perhaps even an accident.
Slow down and enjoy the trip. You save gas when you stay within or under the speed limit.
Accelerate slowly, don't stomp the gas pedal, it's not a race.
One of the easiest ways to save gas is to plan your outings. Got lots of shopping to do? Map it out. You can use your computer to help you map out all your stops in the straightest path. This saves time, gas and money. Add some fun to your shopping trips by inviting a friend to go with you. Each can add to the gas kitty and when you add in a stop for coffee and conversation it's a hit all the way.
Car pooling for work, play and shopping all save money. When you go with friends you save wear and tear on your vehicle, money, gas, and lower your foot print for everyone. Planning your trips, keeping your car in top notch condition, cleaning out the trunk, all help you save money, get better gas mileage and keep our planet healthy.
