Fuel costs have been sky rocketing. There are a number of ways to save money on gasoline. One way is to be observant! How many times have you noticed that when the weekend or a holiday approaches gas prices go up.? On Monday gas prices go down! Common sense should tell you to wait until the beginning of the week to fill up. There are several other ways to save money at the fuel pumps.
1.) ROUTINE CAR MAINTENANCE
Keep your tires inflated to the proper specifications. Balanced and proper tire inflation will also help save on fuel usage. If you have not changed your fuel filter for some time, now may be the time. Try not to overload your vehicle with added weight such as extra tires, heavy tools and whatever items may be lurking in the trunk of your car. Added weight overloads your engine which will use more fuel. Check your air cleaner and change it if it is dirty. You may not have to change your oil every 3,000 miles, however an oil change should be on your list of things to do for your vehicle. There are routine checkups for your vehicle in order to run more efficiently which will save money on gasoline usage.
2.) LIMIT THE USE OF YOUR AIR CONDITIONER
Unless you are elderly or have breathing problems, turn off your air-conditioner. Air-conditioners overwork the motor which will use more fuel. Roll down the window if it is not all that hot outside. Try and park in shady areas on hot days, then if you have to use your air your car is not as hot. I tend to turn my air off especially when driving up a steep incline.
3.) IF YOU HAVE CRUISE CONTROL, USE IT.
Another suggestion is to use your cruise control if you have it. Cruise control will allow you to maintain a constant speed especially on long trips. Cruise control will also keep you from braking so often. Cars consume the most gas as it accelerates. It is not difficult to stay a few car lengths behind the car in front of you so you do not have to brake so often. Another plus for not braking so often is you will be saving money on brake jobs.
4.) WALK
When I just have to go to the neighborhood store, I walk. It takes about a half an hour and I save money by not driving my car. If feasible and you are healthy or looking for a way to get healthy...walk. Walking is great exercise and cost effective for fuel usage.
5.) CARPOOL
Carpool is yet another way in which to save money on fuel. Two or three people can share the cost of fuel and is a great way to visit with friends and co-workers.
6.) COMBINE ERRANDS WITH SHOPPING
Combine shopping trips with other errands. Try and complete everything you need to do in one driving trip rather than making multiple trips. If you have ever lived in a rural area, this is a must in order to save on gasoline.
With a little common sense and some effort on your part you can put all your extra money you will save at the gas pumps and buy yourself something besides fuel.
