The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People...strong words for an organization that was founded to protect the rights of non-Anglo Saxon individuals. It is a name that spears the heart with its truth. People of "color" are still at a disadvantage in this country.

To change the name of this organization would be to create a euphemism...to water down what it really is. This organization is in place (theoretically) to assist people of color in their daily battles with discrimination and inequality.

People of color, in today's society, can mean any number of ethnic backgrounds or cultures other than your "average" Anglo-Saxon. If the name is changed, then wouldn't you have to change the name of the Anti-Semitism Society? Or the Skinheads? Or EVEN the KKK? Why is that not debated?

Anglo-Saxons have tried for centuries to control everyone's thought process and ways of doing things. By allowing name changes, they regain control over that which they have no control. We MUST continue to stand up to forced changes that only benefit the already powerful.

Those who say that racism and discrimination are not as bad as it was before the 1980s should take a step back and open their eyes. Look at Malice Green or the Jenna 6. These individuals were retaliated against simply because they were individuals of color. Look at the ads for Feed the Children. How many of the children that they show on those ads are Anglo-Saxon? Also, wasn't there a planned assassination attempt on Sen. Barack Obama recently by a form of Skinheads?

Racism is alive and well. America knows this, but refuses to end it. That is why organizations like the NAACP, Rainbow-PUSH, and The National Action Network are needed. People of color must band together to destroy the hatred and bigotry that is still alive today.

Change the name off the NAACP? NO! Allow the harsh words of its name pierce the heart of all who hear it. Allow the name to stand as it is as a reminder to those of color that we are still oppressed. Allow the name to give us a proverbial kick in the rear that is needed. People of color have become complacent with society as it is today. We are really no better off today as we were in the 1960s...racism has just retreated and regrouped to plan their next attack. To change the name of the NAACP is to try and change a people. Remain WHO you are, stand up, and FIGHT! We are PEOPLE OF COLOR AND PROUD OF IT!
