Many people may find that trying to control their temper is a lot like trying to take over a city.
In fact some of us may say that it would be easier for them to take over a city than to try and control their tempers. If you agree with me, than you also agree with what King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 16:32.
One thing about controlling ones temper and dealing with anger that I have noticed is that when someone gets that angry they easily lose control and do more damage than the most violent of storms. I sometimes think that the creation of the "Incredible Hulk" was a pretty easy concept knowing how some people handle (or that is don't handle) their anger.
Why is it so hard to control our anger? I believe that part of it is because we do not know what it is. We begin to feel that rush of energy, or we begin to feel our blood boil and we have to unleash it. We have to get it all out. Often times that is exactly what we are told to do. Beat a pillow, run a mile, or go somewhere and scream as loud as you can, all of these things people have told to do to deal with their anger.
Some people are given medication to handle their anger, and some people will use their medical conditions as an excuse so they do not have to deal' with their anger. I do not know how many times I have been told by others that they cannot help it, when they become angry they are angry.
Of the many reasons I decided to get in to the ministry one of them was because I discovered something very unique about the Bible. Which is, if I apply what the Bible says about dealing with anxiety, worry, love and marriage, and anger it really does work.
Now note that I did not say it was easy. I also did not say that it works over night. Applying scripture to ones life does not work like driving up at the window at McDonalds. You cannot go to a Biblical Counselor and say that you want healing from your problems with anger, and a side of Christian bumper stickers on the side. No, I am afraid it just does not work that way.
It is my experience that the Bible does teach us how to deal with anger, and does show us how to control our anger. Now I will grant you, that if one does not believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins you will find the Bible of no help to you. Because the most essential part to dealing with anger rests upon what Jesus did on the cross.
Now, allow me to back track for a second. When it comes to controlling the temper there are two things that have to be done. They are found in Proverbs 16:32,
