When it comes to taste for a beer drinker it's not only subjective but also based on situational circumstances. For instance, if I'm watching my favorite football team I choose light beer because I know I will drink in multiples rather than sip a nice stout or lager. This topic transcends much farther than just taste for the true beer drinker and takes on a social attitude based on venue.

As far as taste goes there is no doubt that sipping a good darker beer has more flavor and ambiance to it and can surely be enjoyed more-so than a light beer. This is to say that there is a time and place for everything and if downing beers on a touchdown run is the scenario then it's light beer all the way. So I have found that taste is conditional to your scenario and the present company at hand. I would challenge any beer drinker to say that he or she cannot stand light beer if one is given to them and there is nothing else around to drink. It is true that beer is an acquired taste as I am sure smoking is no different, although it appalls me to smell it. I've often said in joking fashion that I only like two kinds of beer, cold or free.

So the question is, does light beer taste as good as regular? For the real beer person, not really. Even though beer is made of baseline substances which I'm sure you are all aware the brewing process and the grade of ingredients is different.

There is one major thing in favor of light beer which is the lack of calories. Given of course that most drinkers may drink less stout than light beer which may mathematically wash the caloric content to an even level. But careful must the light beer drinker be if he switches to a heavier beer and tends to drink the same amount. There are spectrum's of alcohol content in the light beers vs. dark beers by a few percent and you can taste and feel the difference. This is the danger of a light beer drinker gone dark and keeping the same pace as before. I realize that is slightly off topic but it has to be noted.

For the purists, light beer is not much less than a sin and some had rather drink water if their beer is not available. There will be purists among us on every occasion whether it's a certain golf ball, brand of car or even shoes. Just as I would not be able to sway a golf partner to use a Callaway when they like Titleist, I would never attempt to sway a Heineken person to switch to Bud Light.
