Why President Bush should not be criticized

by Rayne Britt

I wrote to a similar argument defending George Bush Jr. I believe the article was about whether or not it was unpatriotic to bash the President. I'm sure since my views have not changed that many ideas or sentiments from my previous article will be repeated here.

I will start by saying that I in no way agree with everything the man has done. Nor do I agree with everything that the party he represents has done. But I am not in the man's mind. I can only say that in his shoes I would do what I thought best for the country as a whole and believe that he does the same.

Secondly, while a good deal of the criticism against him is accurate, some of the things he does should not be a surprise to anyone even remotely familiar with American history, for example, the complaint that he attacked Iraq when our focus should have been Afghanistan. If you think back to a little event in American (and world) history called World War II, you will see this isn't the first time this has happened. On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor beginning American involvement in the war. Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt responded by attacking the Germans. We did not concern ourselves with Japan until 1945 when we dropped two atom bombs on them. America was not all riled up about Roosevelt attacking Germany. No one said, "we're in the wrong place; we should be attacking Japan". We crippled the Hitler Dictatorship and moved to Japan last. In comparison to the events of September 11th, 2001, we were attacked by Afghanistan. We retaliated and crippled the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden and capture or kill some of his top men. We (and by we I mean both Republicans and Democrats) saw the possibility that Iraq may have had some weapons of mass destruction that they might have given to the Taliban so we moved in. (And in a side note, in the 1980's when Iraq was warring with Iran and Iran was considered an enemy of the U.S. we sold them chemical weapons to use on Iran. They still had them in the early 90's when they were used against us in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. It was not inconceivable that they would still have some left over a decade later.) We didn't find any but we toppled the rgime of Sadaam Hussein, brought him to trial before the United Nations and freed his people from his dictatorship. Hitler got what he deserved; Hussein did too.

The only difference is that where Roosevelt left Germany to wallow in the aftermath of the destruction the Allied Forces left
