Spooky Spirits comes right at the eve of Halloween, a fitting game for a ghoulish holiday.
The game revolves around two characters, Becky and Tim, a set of siblings who are employed as Wardens in the spirit realm. Their job is to watch over the spirits, known as Spookies, so they do not haunt and frighten the innocent humans of earth. However, depending on your character choice in the beginning of the game, your sibling neglects their post long enough for the Spookies to escape! Now you are tasked with tracking the devilish fiends to earth in hopes of recapturing them before they wreak havoc on the easily scared humans.
Spooky Spirits comes with three different game modes: Panic, Puzzle and Eternity. Panic is designed for players who enjoy fast paced timed games. You must hurry to make the matches as fast as you can before the time expires and you lose the opportunity to catch the rogue spirits. Puzzle lets a casual player enjoy the game at his or her own pace. Eternity is there for the great achievers that would want to see their name emblazoned in a Hall of Fame next to an astronomical number of points. Eternity is similar to Panic, but instead of break neck speed at all times, the game speed increases as you make matches. In these modes you are given a set of colored blocks, some of them containing the Spookies you are trying to capture. The keyboard arrows and spacebar are used for the gameplay, allowing you to select, swap and drop the blocks down, similar to Tetris.
The graphics are childish and exciting with your character speaking to the player in fun gibberish. Becky and Tim are designed and animated smoothly. The background music adds to the fun atmosphere of the game as well, and really puts you in the mood to catch those rascals of Spookies! The replay value of Spooky Spirits seems mediocre, as you can begin only once more as the character you failed to pick the first time.
Overall Spooky Spirits moves away from the traditional match two/three puzzle games by creating an intriguing gameplay style of Tetris-like proportions. The game lacks power ups and special blocks that are a staple of puzzle games and any sort of awards system, which may put a damper on those players who like to be rewarded for chains and skillful play.
