focus of our military efforts, while the pursuit and capture of the man chiefly responsible for the actual attacks, the infamous Osama Bin Laden, was left in the hands of Pakistanis that in significant part sympathized with his actions and causes. Bin Laden remains free to this day, most likely roaming between the Pakistani-Afghani borders, while the United States spends $10 billion monthly in Iraq with our country's economy and infra-structure crumbling to the worst level since the Great Depression of the 1930's. The PATRIOT Act was laying in wait to be immediately approved within days of the 9/11 attacks - an over-bearing measure that carves deep grooves out of the United States Constitution. Most outrageously, this government has detained United States citizens for years in Gauntanamo and other secret holding prisons worldwide, where the best case result for these detainees, most of whom have not been formally accused of wrongdoing, is to be released and deported without recompense. That is, American citizens are deprived of their liberty without due process and without redress for their grievances.
The world history of empires is that such will eventually fail and, at best, retreat to a fraction of their former holdings and sphere of influence. The reason that this is the most important election in the history of civilization is that the "United States vs. the World" only ends in two possibilities - the United States loses or we take and destroy the world along with ourselves. Given the power, military might and air superiority of this country, we will always be the most powerful nation in the world, but as an increasing number of countries worldwide become our sworn enemies and develop nuclear capabilities, we will have to decide how to abide with friends and foes, the latter of which are clearly willing to die if it means the destruction of the United States in whole or significant part.
THIS CAMPAIGN AND THIS ELECTION: Along with the countless problems inherent in the Republican party, the intertwining of the religious right with the party threatens the erosion of the American way of life as much as any foreign enemy. Regardless of one's beliefs, Athiest or Theist, Christian or Muslim, Catholic or Protestant, it is the basest insanity to battle and seek destruction to support the tenets of faith or religion in the name of concepts that no honest person can say they know for certain and that is more an accident of birth than anything else.
