Hair is ever growing and styles that are "in" are ever changing.
This proposes a problem if you wish to keep up with the times and also look your best.
First off, hair dressers need to be trusted to get a successful haircut. If you are going to some shady barber shop that you have never gone before, do not expect the best. You need to know where you are going and if they have a god reputation. The best place to go is somewhere where you are familiar with and the hair dresser knows you and your preferences.
Know what you want when you get there. If you are undecided by the time you sit in the chair, then the hair dresser might make a suggestion about what hair cut you would look best with, and sometimes that does not always turn out for the best.
Do your research! Figure out what type of face you have and what your style is and what different hair styles would ft with both of those things. If you are looking for elegance, do not chose a punk rocker hair cut. Many magazines have little snippets on what face type fits well with the type of hair style, so next time you check yourself out in the mirror, figure out what face type you have and see what styles would look best on you.
Be true to yourself! Only get a haircut that you, yourself would see you having. Do not get pressured into getting something that you think will look awful on yourself, because although hair grows back, its not always fast enough.
Ask opinions. See if your friends or colleagues agree with your idea. If you are serious about doing something new and drastic, make sure at least a couple other people put their views in.
In the end, its up to you. Its your style, your preference and your personality. Hopefully these tips help, but in the end, its what you want to do.
