Before buying a dog for your family you need to do some research. Selecting the appropriate pet for your family can really make a difference. Reading about the experiences of others can help you make a decision. For things you should know about Golden Retrievers see my list of facts below.

1. Shedding- Golden Retrievers have a lot of hair. It's long and blond and soft. They shed hair in your house and it gets on your clothes. You need a decent vacuum!

2. Retrieving- This type of dog has a need to retrieve. They could literally do this for hours. You can sit on the couch and just throw the ball. They will fetch it again and again!

3. Swimming- Golden Retrievers love water and swimming. Make sure that you fence in your pool. We have trouble taking our dog to the cottage. She spends all of her time in the lake!

4. Eating- The way to a Golden's heart is the stomach. They will love you for giving them treats. They are not usually picky and will eat almost anything. Our golden eats pebbles and sticks!

5. Children- This type of retriever is great with kids. They're laid back and gentle and calm. Our golden doesn't flinch if the kids pull her hair. If she's comfy she won't even move!

6. Lazy- Golden's get lazy with no work to do. Our dog likes to sleep on the couch. She only raises her head when we come in the door. She won't get up unless there's a reason!

7. Size- A Golden Retriever is a larger breed. They take up room in your car and your bed. Our golden has a seat in the van to herself. They require a lot of space!

8. Smart- This type of dog is very smart. You can teach them interesting tricks. We taught our dog to open a cooler. They'll try any trick for food!

9. Loving- Most Golden Retrievers are giant lap dogs. They love to cuddle and snuggle together. Our Golden loves to rest her head on our laps. She'll cuddle on the couch for hours!

10. Strong- As Golden's can be close to one hundred pounds they are definitely known for their strength. It's difficult to move them unless they are willing. Try a gentle leader for walking!
