Costs keep going up and up these days. Is it any wonder then that some of us are beginning to wander into doallr stores for the first time in hopes of stretching our paycheck to the end of the month? Whether you're not sure what to look for, you're worried about quality or you've been disappointed in the past you can find good deals at the dollar store. If you do your homework beforehand you'll be sure to get a better deal.

To start with it helps to know which departments offer the best chance of finding a deal. Kitchen gadgets are a great place to start. The products are average quality, so they may not last for years, but this is a great way to find items that you use frequently or lose frequently. If you've ever lost a nice serving spoon at a potluck (or found it in your kids' sandbox) then you know it's a great idea to have some extras on hand. Kitchen timers are a great find as well. These can be used to keep track of computer/video game time, homework or even time-outs. If you're trying to "go green" for your next camping trip these kitchen gadgets are a great buy. Better than plastic, but not so nice that you will be heartbroken if they get melted in the campfire, or lost in the lake.

You can also find some great deals in the office supply department. Again not all of the items are great quality, some things like glue, tape and rubber bands aren't always worth the cheaper price tag. However, envelopes, paper clips, rulers, and pencil sharpeners can be the same quality as higher priced stores. In addition scrapbook supplies are also sold in dollar stores and can be a great find for little girls who are just starting out.

Books, word finds, sudoku puzzles, coloring and activity books are great finds at the dollar store. These are great to pick up when you need to entertain a kid at the Dr's office, in the car, or when you're busy at home. Some stores have Disney and Sesame Street activity or school books.

Dollar stores also offer a great deal on all types of containers-boxes, baskets, food containers, plastic caddies, etc. as well as cards, and wrapping paper.

Cleaning products can be a good deal but be sure to check the unit cost. Often the dollar store sells a smaller bottle, so you're not spending as much at once, but over the long haul it will cost you more. Cheap fabric softener sheets will not give your clothes the long lasting fragrance you're used to, but they will keep away the static cling. Their cleaning products are comparable, but sometimes you will be disappointed. Don't give up, try again, sometimes it takes a few tries to find the real bargains.

Shampoo can also be a great deal as the ingredients are similar, however if you buy a cheap shampoo be sure to stick with your more expensive conditioner. Cheap shampoos may not smell as great, but they'll get the job done. Cheap conditioners though vary more in ingredients and will leave you with a noticable difference.

While it helps to know what to look for in the store there are a number of bargains that can only be found by wandering through the dollar store. You never know what deal might be waiting for you. Happy bargain hunting!
