I can tell you where a million dollars can be better spent. Give that million to the Willingboro, NJ High School, who just recently had a $1.25 million dollar budget cut, causing the elimination of an alternative school for "troubled students" and a reduction in staff. You want to know why there are "troubled students" in a place like Willingboro, NJ in the first place? It is because of the long standing tradition of school boards in this country cutting at the throat of inner-city and low income area schools, and funneling all and any tax money into the schools that make Newsweek's Top 100 High Schools every year. If the school board does not care about the well being of its students, why should the students care about the well being of their school board?
Would anyone like another example of where a million dollars could be better spent? Give it to the free clinics scattered all over the country. The biggest reason for citizens of the Unites States either being deeply entrenched in debt or having to declare bankruptcy is due to their inability to pay their medical bills. One million dollars spread out to all the states could give those free medical and dental clinics just a little more desperately needed breathing room.
Take that million dollars and fund it towards a presidential candidate who actually cares about what the people of this country want. Ralph Nader has a litany of issues that he will address without question, but neither Republican nor Democrat parties will touch with a ten foot pole. We always forget that in this democracy, the people have every bit as much power as the government who tries to bully us into believing that such power does not exist. He is the only candidate that sees what the vice grip of corporations are doing to this nation. Take a look at Nader's website to get a good idea of just where the top two presidential candidates compare to him.
How about taking that million and giving it to an organization like Children of the Night? Whether you like it or not, the pornography industry is a form of prostitution. Many of the young "barely legal" boys and girls you see in films and magazines are in that industry for the same reason many children or young adults turn to prostitution: they were sexually abused at least once in their lives. A person whom they assumed was a guardian, family member, or friend, commited the exact same evil said guardian was supposed to protect them from in the first place. Therefore, according to their logic, if people are just going to use them for sex anyway, why not get paid for it?
I could come up with a hundred more reasons a million dollars could be better spent than towards Paris Hilton telling the tale about how she got caught speeding and actually had to be reprimanded by the same law officers and officials who had allowed her to slip through the systems fingers so many times before in her life. Excuse me for not shedding a tear for her as I am too busy working my fingers to the bone creating a career and a life as a single mother.
