The bathroom may be the smallest room in your home but it is also the best used floor space. The bathroom is the place where you often perk yourself up in the morning before starting your day, dispose of bodily waste, perform oral hygiene, cleanse the body, relax tired muscles, spruce yourself up, apply make up, freshen your self before going out, brush your hair, do your nails, de fuzz your legs, shave your face, pluck your eye brows, wax your underarms, color your hair, relax your mind or even arouse your senses.
You need to know what you want from your bathroom before you start to remodel your bathroom. Then, acquaint yourself with the fixtures and fittings that are readily available and also look for special items you would like. Check the sizes, shapes, colors and finishes as well as cost. Collect as much information as you can on any special installation procedures that need to be accommodated like extra electric power, plumbing or drainage or even extra space that a unit may require.
The next obvious area to consider is the amount of physical space your bathroom will occupy. This will have an impact on what fixtures you will be able to use. There is no point in dreaming of a spa that takes up all your room if you also need to install a toilet, hand basin and a separate shower. This is the time to decide how your bathroom will look and function. This is the time to choose what size fittings and fixtures will work for you and your bathroom.
If you are remodeling a bathroom in an older style home be aware that you may need to consider replacing or reworking items that are out of sight but are vital to the workings of your bathroom. You may find that you need to do more than just replace the bathtub and tiles.
Look at adjacent walls that may show signs of moisture seeping through indicating failed tiling grout or failed waterproofing material.
Check bathroom walls for mildew and poor room ventilation. Check that drains and pipes work efficiently. Rust, overused taps, failed rubber seals and old fittings may all need replacing or require additional attention to have your bathroom working effectively.
You will need to budget for all this additional work. You may need to consider a new concrete floor with additional waterproofing to floor and walls, extra ventilation for the room either by larger windows and or mechanical fans, reworking pipe work and existing plumbing and especially replacing failed existing drains. These items are not uncommon in an existing bathroom that has undergone many years of use.
Total bathroom renovations are very costly. If you are not prepared for additional works and cost it can be a nightmare. So, be prepared and budget for your repairs, restoration and redecoration of your bathroom. Remodeling your bathroom can be a gratifying and very enjoyable project to do. To transform an old, tired, outdated and overworked bathroom into a relaxing, fully functioning dream haven' is very satisfying indeed!
