Oscars are intelligent freshwater cichlids native to South America, and so could be found in Brazil, Peru, and Columbia. Samples have been introduced to water bodies in Australia and China. Scientifically, Oscar is known as Astronotus ocellatus. Patterns and colors are varied in Oscars. Marble cichlid, tiger Oscar, or velvet cichlid are the common names of this slow growing species of fish. A good aquarium fish, Oscar could grow to a length of about 15 inches long (38.1 cm or 1.25 ft ) and 3.2 lb in weight. And with adequate care, this popular pet could live up to 7-12 years. Oscars are best kept at a temperature between 25-28 0C (77.0-82.4 0F).
Having purchased the Oscars (4-6 juveiles are the minimum) in a reliable pet store, the aquarium management of the pets requires that a plan is set in motion on how to care for these lovely critters. To this end, the following are the steps to take:
Set up a freshwater tank
Oscar is largely a freshwater fish and so the habitat in which it is to be kept should conform to this standard. The best material of construction is glass and may be sourced in parts or purchased readymade.
Choose an aquarium size
The minimum tank size for Oscar should be about 40-50 gal. This size range is adequate to allow for hyperactivity as well as sufficient room as they grow bigger. Bigger tank size such as 600 gal is possible if there is space for it. The main factor in choosing a tank size is the number of Oscars to be kept inside. 150 gal aquarium may cost about $400-$450.
Wash the aquarium
Whether the fish tank or aquarium is readymade or an improvised unit, it is very important to use soap to wash it clean. Remember that soap is a biodegradable detergent and the risk is minimal if the tank is infected with some parts per million after washing. Doing the same with detergent may or may not constitute danger. So, to avoid doubt, use good quality soap. The washing should include all of the components of the aquarium, including sand, gravel, and rocks.
Find a place for the aquarium
The aquarium is the habitat or home for the lovely pet Oscar, so a permanent location in the home should be reserved for it. Family members could assist in this decision making process. The important elements to consider include low temperature, low visibility, and a no-disturbance area. An optimum temperature of about 25-28 0C (77.0-82.4 0F) is required to be maintained around the pet.
Fill the fish tank
The appropriate tank materials include high quality sand
