Having been a backyard mechanic for most of my life. I've found that most after-market product's are quality parts. On most occasion's they are made by the same manufacture as OEM part's. Strange isn't it. The key to using after market part's is very simple. Make sure that the company where your buying your part's, stand behind their product's. On most occasion's, it will be clearly marked on the packaging. This part meet's or exceeds the same qualities as OEM part's. It's really that simple!
Such reputable dealers are AutoZone, or Orielly's. There are several others but this is just to name a few. There will alway's be what I call knock-off part's. These are cheaply made, or they've used sub-standard materials in their manufacture. Most of the time they will come AS-IS. In other words, with no warranty what so ever. For these parts, you might as well be throwing your money out the window!. On most occasion's, they're not worth the time to install, much less work as advertised. So your best bet is to avoid them entirely!
For some people, it's the manufacturer's stamp that they believe in. Not the part itself! They somehow believe that if the part they are installing has the correct Manufacturer's stamp. It means that it is the absolute best in quality. Although this is in fact the case in SOME case's. For the majority, after market part's are every bit as good, if not better than the original! A lot of times a part that's been manufactured after the fact is even better because there may have been a slight problem with the original part, and after a short time has gone by, the original Manufacturer realizes there was a problem with the original part, and takes measure's to correct the problem.
In most situation's like this. The people who install the parts have already notified them that there was a slight problem with the original part. In this type of industry, news of this nature travels very quickly, and the companies who manufacture after-market parts and accessories are already aware of the problem, and have taken the necessary step's to correct it in their own product's. So this will, in fact, lead to an after-market product being better than the original!
So. If someone tells you that after-market product's are somehow, inferior to the original. Don't buy it just because they said so! Take it from someone who is knowledgeable in their field of repair or replacement. For most Mechanic's. The name on the part is not what's important to them. It's the quality of the part, and the warranty that come's with it, that's important!
Take it from someone who work's on car's for a living, and not from someone who is endorsing a certain name-brand product. If you buy your part's from a reputable dealer who only deals in quality part's. You will find, maybe to your amazement, that a great deal of the time, they will prefer to use after-market, replacement part's. Simply because they're better, and in a great many case's, cheaper for the average consumer!
