The dwarf puffers represent one of the smallest but popular aquarium fish known to aquarists (fish keeper). It lives entirely in freshwater, as brackish water could reduce its lifespan by one-third. Dwarf puffers are violent fish and will define territories in their habitats. They are not particularly good breeders, but could be fun to have around.
Naming
Two species of dwarf puffers are known, and are scientifically called Carinotetraodon travancoricus and Carinotetraodon imitator. Many people also refer to dwarf puffers as pea puffers, pygmy puffers, or blue-eyed puffers.
Nativity
Dwarf puffers is a native of India, specifically from the water towns of Kerala State in the Southwestern province. Since 1989, dwarf puffers began to gain popularity because of the rise in the level of exportation of Indian products to other parts of the world. Now, dwarf puffers is found in popular stores in Europe and the United States of America.
Size
Fries of dwarf puffers are very small indeed but they could grow to adult size of about 1 in (2.54 cm). They represent the smallest fish in the family of puffers. At about six weeks old, if well fed, they could attain a length of three-eight to one-half of an inch. The female's body is much rounder than that of the male.
Appearance
Their body is scale-less but covered with patches (or spots) of different colors and shades. These spots could radiate light giving an impression of bluish green to black, most especially when lightness is in contrast to darkness. Their eyes move like that of chameleon, appearing blue though black in the presence of light. Their huge tails are used for steering and like a fork to hold any food item around.
Cost
A dwarf puffer costs on the average $2-$5.
Habitat
This species of fish is a lover of freshwater. While dwarf puffers can accommodate a wide range of temperatures, the optimum is 26 0C (80 0F). Lots of caves and tunnels are welcomed by this fish. Dwarf fish will become unhealthy if bred in brackish water. Again, its life span is reduced considerably. The tank size varies, but the range 5-20 gal is common. Nitrates in their water should be kept as low as 18-20 parts per million. Hardness should read a value between 8-15.
Concentration
Overcrowding is a big threat to the live of dwarf puffers. So, it is advisable to keep to 2-4 gal per fish when they are fries. Juveniles and adults will definitely need more.
Feeding- nutrition
Dwarf puffers are lovers of flake and pellets, but these foods could be wasted if
