Supermarkets caught in global conspiracy to rule the world? Perhaps, but in reality not likely. It would be nice and easy to point to one or two culprits that we can blame for the situation that we find ourselves in in this country but not at all realistic.
For a start we have to ask ourselves what do we mean by British Food Culture? If you were to ask me I'd say it was long and complicated broth of every conquerer immigrant, colony and trading partner we've ever had. Then I'd have to ask whats s bad about the situation we're in. Anyone near any sort of small town can probably walk into a supermarket 24 hours a day and buy food from all around the world. Is that such a bad thing? I think not, as the ubiquitous Mr oliver has shown if people a first informed about taste and flavour and methods of cooking, then concern for quality, locality and sustainability will follow. At least as much as can be hoped for within a country that somehow has to cope with the logistics of feeding 75million people in a free market economy.
All this to think about and I haven't even got started on restaurants perhaps I'll leave that part of British Food Culture alone fo now and suffice to say. Don't bemoan our food revel in it.
