Gasoline prices: How to save money at the gas pumps

It would be nice if we all could trade in that our old gas guzzler for a new fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle, but for most of us this isn't an affordable option. Take heart, however, as tthere are ways to cut back on gas usage and expenses and here are a few ideas that may help.

BUY REGULAR GAS: Unless your vehicle specifications require premium gas, buy regular. Some engines run better on regular gas and you'll certainly save money.

WATCH PUMP PRICES: Gas stations often lower their prices in the middle of the week when sales are slower. So keep an eye open for those special days.

AUTO MAINTENANCE:  Make sure your tire pressure is correct. If the pressure is too low your gas mileage will suffer and if it is too high there are safety issues. Have your air filters checked and replaced when needed, as the flow of air is important to efficient fuel consumption. Also change your oil and have other fluids checked.

LOOK FOR DISCOUNTS: Some large grocery or retail chains offer discounts on their brand of gas when you shop at their store. Some offer ten-cents a gallon off when you spend a specified amount of money on groceries, etc.

COAST: Try to coast more and hit the brakes less. This is especially true in heavy city traffic. Many of us grew up in cities and developed the habit of speeding up to the next red light and then hitting the brakes, then speeding off when the light turns green again. This uses much more gas than taking your foot off the gas and coasting slowing down and maybe not having to stop at all it you time the lights right.  Accelerate slowly when the light turns green.

SLOW DOWN: Some newer cars show you the MPG you're getting as you drive.  It's amazing how much higher your MPG is when driving just a few miles per hour slower.  Speed limits are set for safety reasons, not as a challenge.

CONSOLIDATE TRIPS: Cut down on the number of trips you make. One way to do this is to consolidate your errands. Instead of running to the grocery one day, the post office or dry cleaners the next day, make a loop and one round trip on the same day. This will also save you time and wear and tear on your vehicle.

CAR POOL: . If you can share your ride to work with three or four other people and divide the expense, your gas usage will take a drastic plunge and your bank account will see a hefty increase. Join in with your neighbors or family and share shopping trips. Or shop for each other when one of you is going to the store. You may only need a
