Evelyn Brandon watched closely as the Italian Mafia leader got up on stage to deliver a speech. She glanced over at her temporary partner for this mission, Luke Harrow, who was watching the same man intently. Evelyn turned her attention back to the Mafia leader. A second later, she felt a pair of eyes on her, but the feeling had left her just as fast as it had come. She took a deep breath, concentrating on the Mafia leader, the reason she was here, and the reason she would be here tomorrow, unknowingly to others.
Tonight, he was the only man she would keep her eyes on. He bowed down to the crowd who greeted him with massive applause, dressed in an immaculate black Armani, and a sliver bow tie. Evelyn had to admit; he looked pretty attractive for a man his age.
Turi Berano addressed the crowd. "Thank you, my friends, for coming. Today is a very special day for me. It's my son's birthday." He pointed towards his son, Hilario, who lifted his champagne glass quietly when there was another round of applause. Obviously, he realized that this party was more for his father than it was for him.
As Turi droned on, Evelyn took the opportunity to scan to enormous ballroom, taking in every single detail. It was a beautiful place to be. Tables laden with drinks and food were positioned at every available space. Large gold chandeliers hung from the ceilings, illuminating dim lights and at the right corner of the room, a space was left vacant for dancing later on. Expensive paintings from Impressionist artists decorated the walls. But none of those was what she was here to see. She noticed that every exit was covered by at least two huge guards. They seemed somewhat unprofessional in the way they behaved and she was surprised that someone as thorough as Turi would even hire guards like those to protect his mansion. A few of the guards were undercover in the midst of the crowds, dressed in dress robes and a tie. She noticed how some of them kept touching their right ear, no doubt wearing a transmitter.
"Carley," a voice called behind her.
She spun around and saw her "boss for the night" standing there, holding two trays of hors d'oeuvres. He looked at her expectantly and she groaned. She wasn't fond of doubling as a waitress, but for tonight, it was the only way of getting inside the mansion without arousing any suspicion. At least Luke has to do it too, she thought, glancing over at her partner, who like her, was dressed in the standard catering outfit.
"Walk around with this
