The Mirror

Joey looks into the mirror
And sees no reflection there.
Frustrated, he screams,
Fists pounding the glass
To make himself appear.
His room is there,
All kempt and clean,
Reflected in the mirror.
But nothing of him.
No glimpse.
No trace.
He reaches out to touch the glass,
It feels cold beneath his skin.

His mother enters the room,
Her reflection in the mirror.
Joey calls out but she does not hear.
She walks into the room
Straightening things as she goes.
She's oblivious to his cries.
She stops and looks into the mirror
To pick and fix her hair.
Joey strikes out at the mirror,
But she still doesn't see or hear.
She takes some laundry
And leaves the room.
Joey's heart fills with despair.

"Why can't I see myself?"
"Why aren't I there?"
He asks himself as fear creeps in.
He looks down at his hands,
Then waves them at the mirror.
Still nothing.
Shaking with fear and rage,
Joey turns from the damnable mirror
And screams at the sight before him.
He realizes now his horrible fate,
For there is nothing there
But darkness.
