Poetry: Death of a friend

He became Gone

the way that people do

when they reach the going.

Not gone like in another room or house.

Not away on a visit or vacation.

Nothing was packed or locked or arranged.

He just went and now

he has become Gone.

Understand.

He will not come back with

arms full of groceries

wearing that yellow floral Jimmy Buffet shirt-

Won't walk in with a smile and a

six-pack at 8:00.

He won't call.

There are no phones when you

have become Gone.

So many ways and degrees of going,

but no leaving can rival the final departure.

He left alone and arrived alone,

leaving us to wonder where and why he had to go. . .

why he had to be Gone.

But Gone he is.

He is Gone.
