girls if they would like to watch while I gave blood? The oldest girl was all for it; but it took a little convincing to get the youngest daughter to watch. She was still afraid that something terrible was going to heppen to her daddy. With a little talking, mainly from her sister who wanted to watch, she agreed to come back and watch. She was finally convinced that everything would be alright when I was able to talk to her while giving blood. Maybe that's what convinced her or maybe it was the cookies and juice the ladies watching those who had already had donated their blood gave her.

When we left the center to continue going to the square dance building, she was fasinated by the idea of giving blood. Her only question was how did they get my blood from Hawaii to Ohio where my friend's father was going to have his operation. Once she understood that my blood would stay in Hawaii to help someone, and that my friend's dad would get credit for the donation, she thought the system was pretty great. Since that day 25 years ago, she has donated blood herself, many times.

I guess the morale of my story, is that if you have to take one of your children with you when you donate blood; be sure and explain what's going to happen. Don't spring it on them in response to a question as you're walking from your car to the blood center!
