Connecting daily activities to work-life goals

by Kevin Hartford

Created on: October 27, 2008

There is no better time to start striving to reach your goals than right now. It may seem overwhelming sometimes, but the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. There are a couple of ways to work to reach those goals each day. These strategies help to narrow down tasks so that they are not daunting or overwhelming. Achieving work-life goals can be the most fulfilling event in someone's career.

The first strategy is to break each goal into smaller discreet tasks. For example, if a goal is to attain a professional certification, then the first step is to find out what the requirements are to get that certification. This could mean that the person would have to go to school or they might just have to break down the requirements and study. This helps with other tasks, but the importance is that each one is charted. With the analysis, a plan of action and a time-line needs to be associated with the goal. A time-line helps to create a sense of urgency.

The second strategy is to do a little bit each day. If the goal is to get in shape, then one can not just work out for one day. It takes real work to get into physical shape and it takes real work to reach goals. If the goals are easily attainable, then maybe they really weren't worth doing, or perhaps not worthy goals. Nothing worth having should be easy.

Another strategy is to get help. Somethings just can't be done alone. By getting help, the goal seeker can create an instant support group that helps to push toward goal attainment. This is important because the fear of letting others down is a very powerful emotion. This emotion can guide a person toward the finish line. The one caveat is that the person does not crash when the goal is not reached, this is where a support group can be very helpful.

In conclusion, there is no better time than to just start working on those goals. There are three strategies that can help anyone reach those work-life goals. The first is to break down each goal into manageable tasks and then create a time-line and plan of action to accomplish each task. The second strategy is to just do a little bit each day; make it a habit. The last strategy is to create a support network that helps to push over the finish line together. Achieving work-life goals need not be daunting or overwhelming, but they should be hard and meaningful or perhaps there should be new goals. Achievement is very important to someone's career.
