Reflections: But why God?

by Marshall Brown

Created on: October 27, 2008

All throughout time, the same question remains, "....but why, God?" When anyone looks to me and asks me that kind of question, I already know what's going through their mind and just how far they are at getting the answer for themselves. We cannot base answers to our life with such questions. This world has it's own uniqueness to be FREE. Freedom to make our own decisions and the decisions of others and nature do affect us. It's ultimately up to us as of to the outcome of our own thinking and ability to deal with the problems we face in life, and not to ask that question.

The reason I say this, is because, we all share free will, and even when we are going through the most terrible of times, we need to realize, God is our father. Parents teach their children as much as possible in life that they may be happy, healthy, and successful. It is up to the child how he or she will turn out. It is not for God to intervene in our lives, he chooses when to step in, already knowing every step we will take. Lot's of people say that when we face such troubling questions that it is a test. Just remember, it is your test, and only you can find the answer.

The hard reality of it all is, that God is not going to reveal it to you, you must find it, within yourself. When I lost my son, I asked myself the same question. I begged God to take my life to return his life to him. It sounds familiar, doesn't it. Then, as time goes on, and the memories became a part of your heart, you realize, God let his own son die on the cross. Jesus could have ran away, kept doing carpentry and doing his preaching on the side. He didn't, he plunged right into the area that needed it the most, the elite of the time that were turning the world into a machine to pay leaders and priests while they never worked a day in their lives. Jesus saw what was going on while working in his shop with Joseph. He saw what had to be done, and the radical thing he needed to do to fix things.

You might ask where I'm going with this, just bear with me. Jesus had a choice, if he didn't, then how could he be tempted by Satan. If he wasn't tempted, it wouldn't be a temptation. He was tempted, he wanted all that the devil offered to him, but he knew he didn't need it. He didn't ask, "But why Father?"

He didn't just speak words, he took action to make things better, made decisions that he knew would make things better, and so must we! When we get that question in our mind, we should do what Jesus did, ask our selves another question, "What can I do, as a free-thinking individual, to do to help this situation and turn it around for the better?"

If we ask that question, we realize the true power that God gave to us all. We don't need the permission of the church, we don't need the advice of a friend, we must climb the mountain in our hearts and minds and find the answer for ourselves and make our father proud, just as Jesus did.
