Being informed is everything when it comes to travel safety for every member of your family. Travelers who go to unfamiliar areas need to have a heightened aweareness. Preparation can avoid trouble that could potentially ruin your family's travel experience.
Write down your travel routes and your family's general plans for each day. Carry a copy of your itinerary and leave a copy at home with another family member, neighbor or friend. As you travel, keep in touch daily with that designated person to "check in" and make any necessary itinerary changes.
Leave valuables and jewelry at home. Medications of all kinds, by law, must be carried in their original containers. If you will be flying make sure that your exterior luggage tags have your business address rather than home address. Pack updated photos of each family member with vital information on the back. When flying, keep important information and papers with you at all times instead of sending them through baggage check in. Keep a list of emergency contacts with each person in your family.
Review maps each day before your activities. Excessive use of maps in public alert others that you are unfamiliar with the area. Park and travel in well lit and high traffic areas. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Leave all packages and valuables out of sight and in the trunk. When possible, only stop at heavily used rest areas and always keep your children with you at all times. Remember to always travel in pairs or groups. A well stocked first aid kit in your vehicle can be invaluable. Adhesive bandages and alcohol swabs also fit easily in a purse or wallet.
Fanny packs are safer, more convenient, and less cumbersome than a purse while you travel. Make sure the latch is at the fron with the bag, not on your back. Wallets should be carried in a front pocket.Avoid displaying large sums of cash or credit cards when making purchases. Place smaller amounts of cash separate from the rest of your money.
Your family's safety as you travel is the the most conscientious thing you can do to help ensure an enjoyable trip. If you are traveling abroad, contact the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.com or by calling toll free 1-888-407-4747. Their site contains a wealth of information anywhere from overseas pet travel to emergencies and contact information.
