It's not just a movie; it's a description of life. It's the story of two people, two unknown people who discover each other through the onset of illness, terminal illness, and it's of their journey together - to the end: through good times, and bad times. Both men are diagnosed with cancer and told they have a year, or less, to live. Carter therefore begins writing a "bucket list" a list of things to do and complete before kicking the bucket. Cole finds Carters list and torments him by adding "fun things" for the pair to do, which he agrees to finance in return. Fun things to do, like travelling the world and sky-diving! Despite arguments and protests from his wife Carter eagerly agrees. Both men then set out in travelling the word, embark upon race car driving, climb the pyramids, visit the Taj Mahal and go on a lion safari. Along the way they discuss topics such as faith and family, and learn from each others past mistakes - such as Carter feeling less in love with his wife.
Carters "Bucket List" included the following: Witness something truly majestic; Help a complete stranger for a common good; Laugh till I cry; Drive a Shelby mustang; Kiss the most beautiful girl in the world; Get a tattoo; Go sky-diving; Visit Stonehenge; Spend a week at Louvre; See Rome; See the Pyramids; Get back in in-touch (previously "hunt the big cat").
"What has been the greatest joy in your life, and what joy have you brought into the lives of others?" Are two of the key lines that put this film on a pedestal, way up high, on its own.
In essence, it is something more than originally thought of, or believed possible. It was funny, heart warming, true to life. It has all the elements of sadness, happiness, denial, and acceptance and, it does more than entertain "it touches you" - in all the right places.
Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson couldn't have been better suited for the characters or Carter Chambers and Edward Cole: two men diagnosed with cancer and how they find strength in each other to fight the disease, and live their lives to the full for their remaining time on Earth. "Two men" from ordinary life - one, a mechanic who always aspired to be a great teacher; and the other, who is a self made millionaire.
"The Bucket List" is one of those great films. A film that only comes round once in a while, and definately shouldn't be missed. Top marks for a story well-made, acted and portrayed.
