As the economy continues to slump and people's wallets get hit by the high prices of gas and airfare, many families are staying at home more than they normally would. Staying at home means people are searching for ways to entertain themselves and their family. Families with kids often need to play outside in the backyard because the indoors can get cramped. However, if your yard is small you might feel limited on your options for creating a space that is functional and fun for your family but still has a relaxing atmosphere.

Simple changes will make the most of all the hidden nooks and crannies that might otherwise go unnoticed and unused. It is possible to optimize your backyard space by creating areas separate areas that will appeal to the while family. Design a special area for children to play and other areas for adults to relax.

Consider the following suggestions to make a small yard appear bigger by using innovative lighting, creative seating and artistic landscaping.

Planting trees that grow straight, slim, and tall can give a tiny narrow yard the illusion of height. Tall growing trees to consider planting in small areas are maple, dogwood, spruce, hickory, catalpa, or poplar.

Accent lighting in the form of solar lights or outdoor fireplaces not only add security to your yard but will help brighten and open up areas which might not ordinarily be utilized.

Building a variety of seating areas and giving each area a different shape and size is a wonderful way to add dimension and depth to a small space. Tree stumps cut low to the ground and grouped in a circle can create a fun campfire aura for the kids. Some benches placed around a fire pit will make an inviting gathering place for family and friends. A small low table and a sling back chair or two in front of a flower garden is an excellent seating area to enjoy nature. A single park bench facing a flowing water feature is the perfect seating area to relax and meditate. Giving each seating area a unique look and feel will form the illusion of a large capacity yard.

Adding a porch swing to a patio area is a wonderful way to add versatility and function to a small space. The swing is a compact seating area and can be a fun way to whittle away some time for the kids. Porch swings are also a romantic oasis in which to snuggle with a loved one and watch the sunset or sunrise.

Keeping your foliage small and low to the ground will make a yard appear bigger because the bushes and other plants will not block the view of the rest of the yard.

Having multiple focal points will make a small backyard appear larger. Use brightly colored mulch in green foliage areas to give the area added eye appeal. Plant a wide variety of different colors, shapes, and sizes of flowers in small spaces that would otherwise be barren. Strategically place unique or colorful stepping stones throughout your yard to showcase multiple zones. Use cute tasteful lawn ornaments mixed in with the landscape to draw attention to different areas of interest.
