As Coleridge so wisely stated: "poetry is the best words in the best order".
Poetry has that wonderful ability to capture the minds, hearts and emotions of absolutely everyone. The sheer number of different styles and formats means that it is almost impossible for someone not to find something that they can connect with and relate to.
The way that Coleridge describes poetry is particlarly well done as poetry does not always have to rhymme, as so many believe it should, it can merely be the collection of a few favourite and selected words.
I believe that society needs poetry just as much as it needs art, music and drama. All are expressions of inner feelings and can be used to portray thoughts and perspectives on anything in society. All are subjective to the individual and allow scope for individual interpretation whilst still maintaining a core meaning. Poetry does with words what art does with pictures, music does with notes and drama does with story.
One can also draw parallels with music and poetry. Lyrics after all are a form of poetry and a crucial element to music. Without poetry we would have a limited amount of music and that I believe would be devestating to a society for music has been around since the beginning of time. Every culture has their own individual types of music and therefore their individual types of poetry. The more poetry out there, the more there is to appreciate.
So yes, poetry is indeed crucial to society and to be without poetry would mean an incompletion of society, and inhability to express oneself fully. Poetry allows us to describe things in so may diffrent ways. One can call a flower beautiful but only poetry can capture just how beautiful that flower is, the impact it can have and the effect it has on us.
