More than just hotels: Youth hostels, couch surfing and more

by Kashf

Booking youth hostels is a great way to save money when vacationing abroad. Based on my experiences I have put together a general overview of the whole process.

Firstly, it is important to understand the concept of a hostel. Unlike a traditional hotel where you would rent a room, in a hostel, you only rent the bed. Most rooms have a minimum of four beds. This means that you would share this room with other people who have rented the other beds. Amenities such as your washroom and kitchen are all shared. Some places provide wi-fi and breakfast services. If you are travelling with family in tow, or on your honeymoon, a hostel may not be a good choice.

When it comes to booking a hostel, you can do so in the same manner as booking a hotel. There are many websites that cater to this. Here are some that may help:

www.hostel world.com

I found the International Youth Hostels to be quite good. With links that span the globe, they can easily be found by their symbol: A blue triangle with the picture of a tree and a house inside. Believe me; this comes in handy when trekking through a foreign land where communication might be an issue.

The environment within a hostel is a very friendly one. You can go about your business without anyone intruding on your personal space. There seems to be an unwritten code amongst backpackers and that is to not touch what isn't yours.

Lastly, it is important to know that if you have only booked for one night and decide to stay for another, you are required to inform the hostel before a certain time the next day.

As currencies vary around the world, I can merely provide you with a rough idea of what your costs would be like. If a regular, run of the mill, three star hotel charges 90 a night, look to pay approximately 14 to 20 a night at a hostel. That is a significant difference and one worth noting when travelling on a budget in 2008.

All in all, hostels make for a great experience as they are an excellent way to meet people from all over the world. Booking with a hostel allows you to reserve more funds towards enjoying your vacation rather than allotting a large portion of it to accommodations.
