Standard methods for alleviating acne, such as topical cremes or diet changes do not necessarily reduce scarring once an outbreak has damaged the skin. Laser technology offers a reprieve from the pitted marks or discoloration that are often the hallmarks of this disorder.
Fraxel, a newer laser technology for acne scar removal, can reduce the appearance of depressions in the skin over time. The procedure can be exceedingly expensive and the results take several months to become evident as the treatment targets the re-growth of new collagen to fill in the hollowed pits of the skin. Skin will also uniformly lighten the over-pigmented areas of the skin.
Most laser treatments, similar to the newer 'light' technologies, require numerous treatments and a rest period between treatments as the epidermal layers heal, stretching out the total treatment period from 1 to six months. During this time, it is especially critical to remain out of the sun, wearing sunscreen each day. Moving forward, sunscreen is always advised.
Though downtime with laser treatments is generally qualified as minimal or non-existent, most laser treatments will leave you minorly uncomfortable and noticeably red for several days and the benefits of the treatment may not be completely evident for up to six months, though minor improvements will appear much sooner. Make up can be worn as long as the skin is not infected or too irritated
Mineral based make-ups are a less expensive alternative for masking minor scarring or discolorations. These cosmetics will not inflame skin or aggravate acne, and may actually help improve skin quality. Preferably make up used following treatment will be mineral based as opposed to oil based.
Though laser treatments do seem to be effective, their success is best coupled with proper diet, sleep, exercise and hydration. Fiber has proven to be an outstanding cleansing accompaniment for acne scar removal treatments as has vitamin C for speeding up the healing process and Arnica Montana for reducing swelling during treatments. Though some will argue against the merits of hydrating with 8 glasses of water a day, there does seem to be an impact on the appearance of the skin.
A dermatologist can best direct you on the most appropriate treatment option to address your clinical and cosmetic concerns based on your particular condition. In addition to laser treatments, there are many other dermatalogical procedures or topical treatments that may better satisfy your budget as acne scar removal treatments may only temporarily slow down the production of new acne outbreaks.
