Public outcry can force Hollywood to clean up their act

by David Dewitt

Created on: October 25, 2008

Outcry is the beginning of action, not the end itself. Outcry without additional action will accomplish nothing. Outcry alone will do nothing but get a few people stirred up. Hollywood does not understand the values of America or the foundation on which this country is built. Hollywood only understands money, sex and power. These are the only things that will make an impact on Hollywood.

How to impact Hollywood money

One of the biggest means to make an impact on Hollywood is in the wallet. Hollywood needs our money to keep them operating. When the money is gone, Hollywood will be forced to respond. The problem becomes two fold: not supporting the low value movies or low value actors and giving support to high value films. By low value movies, I mean that their moral value is low. A movie could have enormous monetary value to a studio and still have low moral value.

The first step would seem to be a simple refusal to support movies that do not demonstrate your personal values. This means that we boycott the movies that are filled with extreme violence, foul language and graphic sexuality. Boycotting low value movies cannot be the solution. The actual movie companies need to be boycotted as well. For example: if a movie company is known for producing movies that have low values and promote foul language, graphic violence and sexuality, we cannot merely boycott those movies. A message must be sent that none of that company's movies will find support. Make your voice heard, write letters to the studio and to the local theater.

Some studios are producing some family friendly movies and we should write letters supporting such movies. Family friendly movies will make more money because people can take their entire family. There are movie studios that produce nothing but clean and wholesome entertainment. We need to support these studios when their movies come to the theater or to the local video store.

Refuse to rent movies that are low values driven. Tell the video rental place that you will not support those kinds of movies and tell them before they arrive. If you see offensive movies at the video store raise the issue with the manager and write the company. Saying and doing nothing gets no where fast.

When actors or actresses do not reflect your values or your standards, do not watch their movies. This may sound simple but it can work. When and actor or actress make extreme political statements, boycott their next movie and that studios movies. Also there are a number
