How to tell if you are a pushover parent

We take on many roles within our lives, but the one of parent has to be the most challenging by far. Raising children is no easy task and kids don't come with an instruction manual. We must rely on our experience, judgement and instinct to provide us the skill to parent effectively. We need to be firm, yet fair, and protective without smothering. In the midst of all this we have to remain in authority and not become a push over. How do you know if you're a push over and your kids are calling the shots?

Do you continually threaten consequences for certain behavior or actions, but never follow through? You're guilty as charged. Once you've made the threat, you must be prepared to enforce the punishment. If there are no repercussions for unacceptable behavior, your kids will walk all over you. Give them an inch, they'll take a mile, as long as you allow it. Assert your authority as a parent, and dole out the discipline. No child ever perished from being held accountable for their actions.

After you have punished your child, do you allow them to renegotiate the terms? You know, they're grounded for a week, but you still permit them to go to the movies with their friends. They can continue being grounded after the movies. What has this taught your child, other than they can manipulate you to their full advantage?

When your child wants something, do you automatically buy it for them? Not only are you a pushover, you've got too much cash to burn. Although it's nice when we can give our kids those little extras, you're really not doing your child any favors by handing them everything on a silver platter. Children need to learn the value of a dollar and how to work for what they want. You're running the risk of raising a child who believes the world owes them. Having to wait and save for that new video game isn't going to cause your child any pain or suffering.

Are you stricken with guilt when you tell your child no? Get over it. It's all a part of life, and your child may as well get used to it. Once your child detects this weakness, they'll milk it for all it's worth. You've got better things to feel guilty about. Saying no is guilt free.

If your child protests and whines enough, do you eventually change your mind and give in to their demands? Never mind pushover, you're a full fledged walk all over. When you've given your answer you must stand by it, no matter how many tears are shed or doors are slammed. You lose credibility and control when your child knows eventually
