Listening to music at work can be whatever you make it. Depending on what kind of person you are you may be easily distracted by music. Also it depends on what type of music you are listening to.

If you are at work listening to a band such as "Slayer" then it may be that you are distracted by the ambiance and sheer anger of the music. You may not be distracted by an artist such as "jack johnson" because he is much quieter and more peaceful than genres like death metal or hip hop.

Also it might just be the task at hand or your job. Like, if your a proffesional skateboarder then listening to music while your out riding comes hand in hand, skateboarders use music for inspiration and to get them into the mood. Be that as it may most of us in the real world are not proffesional skateboarders. If you were a tax attorney then listening to music while you do someones taxes would be almost impossible.

I have come to find for myself that music distracts me from what I do for a living. I am an aviation operations specialist in the army national guard. I find myself constantly listening to directions and do not really have the time to listen to music while I work. There are, in some cases, where I do get to listen to music. Like if my supervisor has me shred "confidential papers" or stock the supply room. In these instances my co-workers and I pretty much always listen to music.

Many people, even myself can listen to music while driving and never get distracted. It might be how lethargic the task is. It might be that you just don't get distracted while driving but I'm glad that car designers built an on the steering wheel music control device. This is so that you do not have to move around while finding your music selection. It is all in the same line of sight and you do not have shift your eyesight alot to see your selections.

In conclusion, I have found that it does not work for me to listen to music while I work. It may work for you depending on what your job is. It does work for pro skaters. It does not work for tax attorneys. So before bringing your mp3 player into the work place. Make a determination on whether you have the right job for music. You should find whether your job is one that you will not be distracted by music. So please, if your doing my taxes then do not break out into song and dance when your favorite bruce springsteen song is on the radio because I will have to go somwhere else to get my taxes done.
