My Lover's Words

She opens her mouth
And from its delicate depths
Spew sharp, slender spikes -
Dripping with curare -
Which penetrate my chest and embed
Their barbed talons into the wall
Of my heart.

With every beat of moving
Muscle, those talons tear
At the source of my existence, rending
It to shreds. The partner of this
Organ, the source of breathe for
Its beat, struggles,

Flutters - and I gasp.
Effective as a plastic
Bag over my face, the
Poison stifles. The pain
Extends beyond my chest
And travels with lightning

Speed to that gray, wrinkled
Mass which controls my
Being. As nerves misfire, contracting
The chest wall, spreading
Tingling sensations
In an ever-extending sprial,

An intense panic which cannot
Be ignored draws
Acid-hot liquid to my eyes
To spill over lashes and caress
My cheeks. Its touch carves
Canyons on my face to match those
In my soul.
