Renal biopsy.
What is actually mean by renal biopsy? Before that, what is biopsy stand for? According to the yahoo! Education dictionary, biopsy is a procedure which is function to remove and examine a sample of tissue from a living body for the diagnostic purposes. Thus, by combining this two word, it means that, this procedure is dealing with the removal of renal or kidney tissue in view of diagnostic or laboratory purposes.
Nowadays, there are actually widely used biopsies as diagnostic purposes regardless of what kind of the disease that we are encountered. Renal biopsy can be performed by many ways. The commonest way is that by using ultrasonography guided biopsy, which is mean that, the doctor will use the help of ultrasound to locate the exact location of our kidney in order to take a sample tissue from our targeted kidney. There are also available CT scan guided biopsy and transjugular biopsy.
Usually the renal biopsy procedure will be held in the radiology room where there is complete facilities and expertise in order to do this invasive procedure. The doctor will ask us to lie in prone position where the biopsy needle will be inserted at the back of the flank area. First of all, the doctor will use an ultrasound scan in order to view an exact location of our kidney that they need to take a sample of tissue. After exact location had been located, the doctor will give us some local anaesthetic just near the area of interest. Then, doctor will make a small incision around that area and will insert a biopsy needle through that small incision area. As needle be introduced inside, we will be asked to take a deep breath and hold it.
After some interested sample tissue had been withdrawal, then, the small needle biopsy will be taken out and slight pressure will be applied at that area in order to prevent bleeding. There is likelihood that the needle will be inserted back several times in order to get enough tissue sample to be analyzed. After this procedure had done, the patient will be necessarily to stay in the bed for at least 6-8 hours. During that period, patient will be given pain killer just to reduce pain at the site of procedure. The amount of paint usually will depend on each individual. Because of anaesthetic agent had worked well, the pain is usually minimal. After this procedure, you might see blood in your urine for at least 24 hours. This is actually normal and no need to worry about it. But, if bleeding last longer, you need to inform your doctor.
