We are all individuals and only YOU can write the book on how your body reacts during pregnancy. I think that all women should be aware when she is pregnant, and should read the books, but keep in mind that we are all individuals and therefore, what is in one book may not relate to you. Even if you read the whole gamut of books that are out there in the marketplace for pregnancy and birth, you still might not find one that entirely describes you.
Myth 1: The first myth or "wives tale" that I dispensed with was that you only have morning sickness with girls. My first was a boy and second was a girl and I was sick even vomiting just before going to hospital to have my daughter. It was not necessarily morning sickness as such because it never always happened in the mornings. It happened any time of day but mostly when I cleaned my teeth, I would be sick. Some bright spark even tried to tell me to avoid cleaning my teeth whilst I was pregnant. That was a really good suggestion especially when the baby was taking what it wanted from my body and in some cases you are more prone to filling whilst pregnant because it is taking a lot of your calcium from you and you need to clean your teeth with fluoride to protect your teeth.
Myth 2: A man's privates and temperature can determine the sex. Another "wives tale" that did work for me was I got my husband to wear proper underpants when we were trying the second time because they say the hotter "IT" is, the more chance of a girl. He usually wears boxers and we had a boy first. Now this could be a myth or it could be circumstance because there is no scientific proof to say that it actually worked. AI read an article about Steve Irwin "Crocodile Hunter" and to conceive his son Bob he actually had them on ice, aparently animals (turtles) are the same. When their eges are layed depending on the tempature of the nest determines how which sex is more dominant when they hatch.
Myth 3: Do not drink wine whilst pregnant. I was recommended to drink wine whilst pregnant but 1 glass every now and then. I was threatening to miscarry my son after 3 miscarriages and I was told by a top IVF doctor in Australia that 1 glass will actually relax the uterus, which means that it may help it from contracting and going into early labor. By the way I have been pregnant 9 times and have 2 healthy children.
Myth 4: Because you are older first time mum, you will have a long labor. This one I truly got wrong because obviously my son did not read that book.
