Preventing online identity theft can be done fairly easily if one puts their mind to it. It is not easy because it takes diligence, but it can be done if you are willing. Let's talk about several identity theft tips to follow that will help you in your quest.
First and foremost, don't ever give out your personal information through instant messaging or e-mail. While it may seem innocuous, easy and quick, this is one of the easiest ways for identity thieves to steal your identity. Instead, if you are going to apply for some financial service online, use a secure website.
Speaking of financial servicesnever use a financial website unless it is a secure website. You only set yourself up to be a victim if you do otherwise. Look for the https at the beginning of the web address, and another indicator, such as a VeriSign badge, stating that the site is secure.
Second, know exactly what you've done with your credit and when. Keep track of it on a monthly basis. Write it down on your calendar if you think you're going to forget.
Next, and very importantly, check your credit report on at least a monthly basis. There are a large number of websites offering monthly memberships to do this very thing. You even have the option of running reports from all three credit reports at once, which is a wise thing to do.
Those credit card offers that you get in the regular mail? Open them, and shred them. Don't throw them away unopenedidentity thieves have been known to dig through garbage and recycling to get personal information. Often they have websites that will link anyone right up, and all the thief has to do is follow those links to take on your identity.
Another very important tip is to never give out your online passwords to anyone. Ensure that your firewall(s) are current, and that you change your passwords regularly. OK, it's a pain in the neckno doubt about thatbut you will keep hackers out, and online identity theft to an absolute minimum.
If you follow these identity theft tips, diligently, and discover that someone has been messing with your creditthen call the police, and report it immediately. The sooner you discover the problem, the less of a mess you will have to clean up.
