Dog travel can add a fun aspect to your family's holiday. Taking your pet along keeps the whole family together and there is no added worry about your pet's safety and welfare while you are gone. You can sve money on pet sitters or kennels as well, leaving more money for the whole family.

Before embarking on a family holiday that includes your pet take a little time to prepare your pet for the trip. If you are travelling by car get your dog used to travelling in the part of the car where they will travel during the holiday. Remember to use a harness and restraint to keep your treasured pet safe while travelling in the car.

A trip to the vet for updates on vaccinations and a check up is a good idea. While you are there discuss with your vet ways to prevent problems on your holiday such as treatment and prevention of car sickness in dogs and preventing dehydration during the journey. Your vet may also be able to provide you with the details of a trustworthy vet in your holiday location should you need one.

Essential dog travel supplies include your dog's favourite blanket or basket, favourite toys, food and water dishes, a harness and lead. Along with these items you will need a dog restraint to keep your dog and your family safe should the vehicle need to stop suddenly or become involved in an accident. There are plenty of anecdotes about small dogs sliding under a seat and under the foot control pedals or large dogs becoming heavy projectiles in a vehicle during a sudden stop

Along the way you may make use of pet travel kennels. These facilities provide short stays for pets when the family is heading off for the day to a theme park, or other place which does not welcome pets. Book your pet's stay ahead of time to ensure availability when you need it.

Travelling with your dog can be fun and hassle free with a little planning. So load up the car, pack your pet's travel bags and hit the highway to family fun.
