Poetry: Fountain of youth

by Ken Dutko

The morning fog of changing days
Clinging icily to my mortal bond
Yet shrouding me in a haze
Guilt and regret plague my conscious

This summer lost to lies
Watching as the sun went down
Everyday, feeling my spirit fall with it
I searched the hopelessness
Bypassing the jewels of life
I wandered the paths
With my head always down
Missing the shining Valley of Peace
Strolling beside the fountain
Passing by ages of man
Always obsessed with the bitter end
Until now awaiting the change
The world almost golden

Glistening, framed by our crimson star
The last heartbeat ignored the chill
And shook my soul free
From the chains of remembered pasts
A shift in reality would be too much
But hope never dies
Golden in the palm of your hand
Let that flame never surrender
Keep fighting the generations
As a new chapter unfolds
I bury the file, my past a closed case
That unbeatable cockroach
I'll finally let slide
Instead of attacking the heart
Again, make your choices wisely
For contention isn't enough
