Traveling with your dog(s) can be an enjoyable experience if you prepare! When planning a trip for you and your family one of the first things you do is make a list of everything to bring with you. This is a sure way to make sure you don't forget anything. Hitting the road with your dog is no different. Take out a pen and paper and think about what you need for your pet everyday at home. This will give you a starting point and from there you can add additional items as you go.

For many dogs, traveling in the car may be boring and uncomfortable. Start your list with items you can pack to make the trip more pleasant for your dog. Create a space big enough for your dog to be able to stand up and move around in. Ideally, if you have a van or SUV you can fold the seats down to give your dog plenty of mobility. Next lay your dog's bed in your car or van in the designated dog space. This should provide sufficient comfort for your dog as you travel. To alleviate boredom bring along one of your dog's favorite toys. A chew toy is most practical for dog travel purposes.

Now that you've made your dog comfortable for the ride, you need to bring other important items for stops along the way. Public rest areas are a good place to stop with your dog. You can take your dog out to go to the bathroom, stretch his legs and give him water. Most rest areas have a designated area for pets and leashes are required. So your dog's collar and leash will be vital. Leaving behind your dogs droppings is not only rude but could cost you a fine. So don't forget to bring a bag and a trowel to clean up after your pet. And finally, just like you, your pet will be thirsty. Make sure to carry a water bowl along with a canteen of fresh water or a cooled jug of fresh water. A snack will probably be appreciated by your dog as well.

Now that you've arrived you will set your dog up just as if you were at home. Your check list should include: dog food, dog food bowl, dog water bowl, collar, leash, up to date dog tags, dog bed, dog toys, trowel and bags to clean up after your pet and any medications that your dog may be taking. A couple of possible extras may be a dog crate and a dog brush if you have a breed of dog that sheds a lot.
