President Bush faces a lot of resistance witin his own party with his plan to send another 20,000 troops to Iraq. It appears that he is a man who cannot accept that the violence in Iraq has spiralled out of control and requires more than 20,000 troops to be halted. Though the increase in troops may help to kill more insurgents, I sense that the terrorists operating in Iraq have no shortage of recruits. Unfortunately, the president seems unable to comprehend how deeply the American presence is resented by many.
Another problem is that with the increase in the number of troops, casualties will almost certainly increase on both sides. It is imperative that the American government talk to Iran and Syria in the interests of better living conditions for all sides. President Bush remarked that he has no regrets about the invasion of Iraq and that the Iraqis should be grateful for his decision to overthrow a tyrant.
Frankly, the situation in Iraq is undoubtedly worse now than prior to the invasion. More than one million Iraqis have fled the country, one of the world's most precious museums was looted, unemployment is rampant and a number of Iraqis are shot and wounded daily. For that, there can be no doubt that they are not grateful.
